Do not go here when it's foggy. You cannot see the volcano. They took are money even though they knew we could not see through the fog. They should of only charged half the money or gave us a rain check. Or they should closed the doors during foggy days. They are stealing are money. We drove a long way for nothing.
Great place to visit on a free summer day! Its at a high elevation so best time of the year to visit is late spring, summer and early fall! Stunning views to be seen along the way! Bring the kids and a picnic lunch. Lots of places to stop and admire the beautiful scenery! Plenty to keep you busy all day long!
Stunning vistas of powerful forces of nature. Worth the drive! Plan to do some hiking and see even more of the area. It was cloudy on the morning we visited. We stopped in at the visitor center in Castle Rock - there they have a live stream from the Johnson Observatory nearest the volcano - it was clear there with a great view! So glad we went to the visitor center; otherwise, we probably would have turned around and headed home.
Mount St Helens is a great trip to take. On Day 1 (from Seattle) we went to Johnston Ridge Observatory. I highly recommend it. Absolutely breathtaking view and lots of wonderful information and kind rangers. Day 2 we hiked the Ape Cave, Trail of Two Forests, and Lava Canyon. Definitely recommend the first two to anyone in the area. The lava tube was cool and lots of fun (bring good shoes, a hoodie, and a lantern/lights for everyone). The Trail of Two Forests was so cool! Try the tube crawl, so fun! Lava Canyon is awe inspiring. But definitely for those up for a challenge. Even the easy loop has a lot of hills. Great views though!
This place is great. I bought a ticket that you have to buy. Apparently I was supposed to buy another backwoods pass for the trail I was on, but I didn't know any better. I hiked about 10 miles, took tons of photos, and met some great folks. All the ranger staff were very friendly. Definitely worth the visit if you're passing through and thinking about it. If you have time give it a day...or more. There are caves and other attractions on the other sides of the mountain.
