For the price of admission, you sure don't get a whole lot — you get the privilege of watching an older video (4:3 aspect ratio) that hasn't been updated in decades, and access to a really small exhibit with different bits of information about Mount St. Helens. But other than that, about the only real value here is a place to stop before you go on up to the observation point and the opportunity to ask any questions to the park ranger.
Clean bathrooms! What a revelation! Also, a wonderful lady had a tiny snack shop set up and was very friendly and sold us some ice cream for hardly any money at all. There was an art show going on somewhere in the visitor center, which I thought was pretty cool. We were pretty tired and our friend who was driving needed to get back to Everett; otherwise we would have spent more time there. So many wonderful people in Washington state. I love it when I lived here in the '90's and I love it more since moving back two years ago. I would most definitely recommend this place to learn more about Mt. St. Helens. For a volcano, Mt. St. Helens sure is pretty...when it's NOT busy erupting, that is!
Move along, nothing much to see here.
Pretty far away from Mt St Helens. You can see it off in the distance, but that's about it. It's fine if you are already traveling on that road and feel like stretching your legs, but don't go out of your way to check this place out.
Excellent visitor center if you have to rush by. If you are going to do just one (out of 5) go all the way to the Johnson Observatory 45 minutes further up the road for the closest experience to the volcano. The mvie there is not the best production, Nova has a better one but it will do.
The gift shop includes a variety of stuffed birds, each with an authentic chirp, screech, or call that plays when you squeeze them. That's how they earned the second star.
State operated visitors center. Well designed with informative displays. However, I would only recommend stopping here if you don't have time to travel over 100 miles round trip and visit the Mt St Helens national monument visitor center where one can better appreciate the geological and physical impact of the 1980 volcanic eruption. The drive alone to the Johnston center offers many stunning vistas
But really, just keep moving on
There is a gift shop filled with the usual touristy fare — Bigfoot magnets, volcanic ash, and all sorts of other things.
